India’s Northeast has long existed in the national imagination as a distant frontier. It is resource-rich yet economically stagnant given its remote geography. For decades, this paradox has endured because geography-imposed limits that policy could not overcome. The region’s landlocked terrain, surrounded by international borders and connected to the rest of India through the narrow Siliguri corridor, has left it dependent, under-integrated, and perennially vulnerable.
