Japan's Engagement in India's North East: Reviving the economy in the post COVID-19 world with focus on Agro-Forestry and allied sectors

India and Japan have emerged as close partners in the recent times and the substantial strategic match between India’s Act East Policy and Japan’s ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy’ has translated into increasing engagement by Japan as a development partner. India’s North East Region has been of particular and strategic interest in this context and several infrastructure, connectivity, agro-forestry and linked projects have been supported by Japan. Given the COVID 19 pandemic in the recent times, it is an imperative to look at how this development partnership can be re-imagined to help revive and boost the economic growth and stability of this region. This brief explores the challenges and possible way outs to this end, with particular emphasis on agri-horti-forestry-aqua and allied sectors, with an aim to highlight areas and ideas where India-Japan development partnership can be a crucial enabler for prosperity and integration.
