Assam, a flood-prone state, is situated within the highly silted Brahmaputra and Barak river basins, comprising 70,634 sq. km and 7224 sq. mtr. drainage area, respectively. On the one hand, these river systems are a lifeline for the region’s livelihood. On the other hand, they make the state highly susceptible to annual monsoon season riverine flooding with an average rainfall amounting to more than 2800 mm during the monsoon period.
