A ‘Wangala’ festival was organized by Asian Confluence to welcome the newly graduated IAS officers of the North East Cadre. The event was hosted by the Deputy Commissioner to welcome the IAS officers who were on a North East Darshan. The purpose of the programme was to showcase the indigenous culture of North East by way of a ‘Garo’ dance performance.
The Wangala is a harvest festival celebrated by the Garo tribe living in Meghalaya and Assam in India and greater Mymensingh in Bangladesh. The tribe play drums and dance as a symbol to thank their God, called Misi Saljong, also known as Ra'rongipa (Sun-God), for blessing the people with a rich harvest.
The officers had the opportunity to witness a troupe of ‘Garo’ dancers perform in their traditional garb which was very entertaining. The lively performance was much appreciated by the audience.
