A two day ‘India-Myanmar Media Dialogue’ was organised and hosted by Asian Confluence in collaboration with Heinrich Boll Foundation, Institute of Social Sciences and Burma Centre Delhi. The purpose of the dialogue was to foster and strengthen the cooperation between Indian and Burmese media for better representation of all the important agendas on India-Myanmar relations.
In the light of India’s ‘Look East Policy’, the dialogue looked to provide an impetus to realize each other’s problems, priorities and objectives and represent the same through media. Mr. Sabyasachi Dutta, director of Asian Confluence, commenced the dialogue by emphasizing the importance of bilateral cooperation where Northeast region of India can play a pivotal role in building a bridge between the two countries. The discussion in the course of two days between the civil society and media representatives looked to analyse and come up with possible synergies to ensure more coverage of the ground realities of both the countries. Media in that way plays an important role in shaping the relationship between the two countries.
The six member delegation from Myanmar included two Member of Parliament from Kachin and Shan states and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Ester Htu San. The dialogue was attended by academia and senior journalists from both India and Myanmar including Dr Walter Fernandes, NESRC, Dr. Khin Zaw Win Htut, Tampadipa Institute Myanmar, DVB media, Myanmar, Bano Haralu, Nagalang, Chitra Ahanthem, Manipur, Henry Lalhlimum, Mizoram, Samudra Gupta Kashyap, Indian Express, Deepak Dewan, North East Sun, Rajiv Bhattacharya, Guwahati C.K Nayak, member of PCI and Neha Dixit, Delhi. The dialogue was successfully concluded with positive response from all the participants in order to carry forward similar discussions in the future.
