A documentary film titled Reliving the Past was screened at Asian Confluence. The film directed by Dr Shobhan N Lamare, Associate Professor of History, North Eastern Hill University, revolves around the legend of a stone-bridge built over the Thlu Umwi River, which became a route from Jaintia Hills to Jaintiapur. It is believed that two 'ramhah' (giant) brothers had built the bridge. The absence of a documented history, makes it difficult to date the bridge.
Taking the audience through a wonderful journey of a land once covered with lush green forests and sparkling rivers, Dr Lamare focused on the variety of stones including monoliths and megaliths.
The documentary looks into the remnants of art and architecture as a text to weave a complex narrative about the integrated political and cultural history of the Jaintia people beyond the cartography of the colonial rulers. In this documentary, Dr Lamare beautifully reconstructed the past.
The documentary can also be seen as a wake-up call for the people of Jaintiapur and to evoke in them a sense of sacredness of their history and heritage.
