Peter Heehs, an internationally renowned Indologist, and a select group of people from Shillong had an interactive session, hosted by Asian Confluence. Asian Confluence is known to provide an open space for creating a better understanding of the Northeast region and this event was no different. Heehs who specializes in South Asian Studies, touched upon the ancient links; between North East India and South Asia, and also shared his own life’s work much inspired by Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy.
Peter Heehs, born in Illinois, developed an interest in India after coming across Indian Swamis, spiritual gurus and sitar exponent Ravi Shankar in Philadelphia. He was then associated with Indian Cultural Centre in New York where he read about Aurobindo’s works and decided to visit Pondicherry, India.
The audience listened with intent as Heehs narrated about his personal life and how he was influenced by Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy which made him visit Pondicherry for the first time more than forty years ago. The audience had the opportunity to experience and see the extent to which India’s rich culture has its influence abroad. The event was a successful display of intellectual and cultural exchange as the interactive session went on for the entire evening.
