An interactive session led by renowned Bollywood Film Maker Rajesh Mapuskar was organized and hosted by Asian Confluence in collaboration with Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). The programme saw a lively interaction between Mr. Mapuskar and University students, media professionals, artists, writers and singers throughout the day. The purpose was to foster a creative dialogue between the audience and the mentor and the role of culture and history in the art of film-making.
Rajesh Mapuskar is known for his first directorial venture with “Ferrari Ki Sawaari” besides being associated with movies like “Lage Raho Munna Bhai” and “Three Idiots” as an Assistant Director.
Mr. Mapuskar was in the city as part of an exploratory trip to the North east in connection with his next film along with the Shillong Chamber Choir. The visiting film maker took the audience through behind the scene stories, the basics of scripting and screenplay. He shared his experiences and valuable inputs on the art of film making and conducted various exercises where he looked to guide them whenever necessary. He highlighted the importance of understanding the region, its history and culture in script-writing. He talked about the richness in culture of Shillong and commended the kind of music it produces which is yet to reach the global stage due to the various socio-economic and political factors. He encouraged the budding artists to look from micro to macro angle while exploring a story.
Earlier in the day, Mapuskar pointed out that people do not connect with this part of the country due to the lack of inquisitiveness and awareness regarding the region. He further added that one doesn’t explore these regions the way they explore Leh and Laddakh or Shimla and that is why it remains alien to the rest of the country.
The audience were left enthralled from the entire session as they reciprocated with a number of questions. The overall session was very productive and a great learning experience for everyone who were present there.
