River Basin Management is the process of coordinating conservation, management and development of water, land and related resources across sectors within a given river basin. This has been recommended in order to maximize the economic and social benefits derived from them in an equitable manner, while preserving and restoring freshwater ecosystems wherever necessary. In 2013, the Ministry of Water Resources formulated the National Water Policy, calling for better governance, planning and development of our water resources. The objective was to protect the rivers and waterbodies by identifying and protecting the flood plains, removing encroachments, checking illegal sand mining and pollution and improving the maintenance of water infrastructure. Through this lecture, Professor Vinod Tare who is a stalwart in the field of environmental engineering and management had shared his perspective on the subject.

Speaker: Professor Vinod Tare, Professor and Founding Head, Ganga Environmental Engineering and Management Programme, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Kanpur
