The purpose of the event was to venture into the historical and cultural ties between India and Japan and foster interaction between the people of the two countries.
Born in Kobe, Japan, Prof. Tomio Mizogami is the President of Kansai Japan-India Cultural Society, Kobe and Professor Emeritus of Osaka University of Foreign Studies. He has taught at University of California at Berkerly, USA, and at the graduate school (South Asian Studies), University of Chicago, USA. Professor Tomio, who teaches Hindi and Bengali languages in Japan, gave his speech in English with the aid of a PowerPoint presentation in actual Hindi and Bengali, to a select audience. He spoke extensively about Dentan, a type of ‘propaganda leaflets’ that were scattered by the Japanese Army to discourage the enemy soldiers in the battlefield during the Second World War. Talking about the current times, he opined that today war is fought by internet, which is called Cyber Terror. He narrated his personal fascinating journey on finding more about Dentas which made him learn the Indian languages and finally visit the country.
The others who spoke on the occasion were former Consul General of India in Japan, River Wallang and Senior Lecturer, Suffolk Business School, UK, Atul Shah. The talk was followed by an interactive discussion where the audience inquired more about Dentans from the scholar. The evening proved to be an eye opening experience for the people who attended the session.
