‘Legends And Lore Of The Himalayas’ An Evening With Deepti Naval, Actor and Kishore Thukral, Photographer

A literary evening with Deepti Naval, renowned actress and poet, was organised and hosted by Asian Confluence, Shillong. The event was organised for the people of Shillong to celebrate the ‘Himalayan Stories and Folklore’ through the emotional journey of Naval’s own experiences as she read out some lines from her book ‘The Mad Tibetan’ (2011).
Deepti Naval, one of India’s finest actors, is known for her 1981 romantic comedy Chashme Buddoor, and is also a photographer, painter and writer. The Mad Tibetan (2011) features original artwork and a unique patchwork of memoir, travel writing, and purification and penned in English, the book explores the complexity of the human condition and all its qualities from cruelty to kindness, love and longing.
The event attracted book lovers from all across the city – students to government officials, Defence personnel to housewives. The Bollywood actor cum-writer, who set out with no purpose but ‘observe nature and see what she would find’, vividly described her experiences with men whom she encountered in Leh and a ‘mad Tibetan’ she came across eventually. The story-telling session brought in suspense, thrill and, closure that was neither sad nor happy. The emotional read made the audience navigate through multiple time frames as they got closer to the characters and their lives.
Earlier in the day, Dr Desmond Karmawphlang, professor, Department of Cultural and Creative Studies, North-Eastern Hill University delivered the opening remarks which was followed by an illustrative talk by Kishore Thukral, writer, researcher and photographer, on the remote Himalayan Valley of Spiti based on his book. The event saw the presence of Senior Government officials namely KN Kumar, SK Jain besides a host of dignitaries.
