With a view to discussing the implications of the proposed dam on the Brahmaputra in Tibet, which will have far reaching consequences on the Northeast Indian region and neighborhood, premier think tank Asian Confluence is set to host a crucial seminar on “Ensuring Water Security, Ecological Integrity, and Disaster Resilience in the Sub- Himalayan Region: The Case of the Brahmaputra” on April 08, 2025, in Guwahati, Assam. This international seminar will bring together leading experts from South and Southeast Asia, policymakers, and thought leaders to discuss the concerns over China recently approving the construction of the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra River at the Great Bend Dam.
Key speakers will include Shri. Tapir Gao, Member of Parliament; Bertil Lintner, veteran international Journalist, and author, Amb. Riva Ganguly Das, former Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India; Mr. Claude Arpi, renowned Tibetologist, Dr. Ranbir Singh, Chairman Brahmaputra Board, and Dr. Truong Hong Tien, Deputy Director General, Viet Nam National Mekong Committee and senior experts from the region comprising Bhutan, Nepal and North East India., The seminar aims to foster a collaborative dialogue between governmental agencies, civil society organizations, environmental practitioners, and academicians. on the immense challenges to the lower riparian regions posed by the proposed dam in Tibet against the backdrop of looming climate change.
This initiative aligns with Asian Confluence’s mission to facilitate meaningful dialogue and actionable solutions on rivers and water security of the region. Asian Confluence had earlier hosted the third edition of international NADI Dialogue in Guwahati. Given the strategic and environmental significance of the Brahmaputra Basin, this seminar is a timely effort to bring stakeholders together for a shared vision of resilience and sustainability.
