Asian Confluence and SPF To Host a Regional Workshop on Rural Development in Collaboration with the Nalanda University, and the Musubi-Te Foundation

The Asian Confluence and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), in collaboration with the Nalanda University, and the Musubi-Te Foundation, are hosting a regional workshop entitled ‘Cross Asian Dialogue on Rural Development – Challenges and Opportunities’ at Nalanda University, Bihar, India, from 7–11 December 2025. The workshop aims to bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and community leaders to reflect on how inclusive and innovative approaches can strengthen the resilience of rural societies. The program will feature representation from India, Indonesia, Iraq, Japan, the Philippines, and Thailand.

Asia’s rural regions stand at a decisive crossroads. Rapid industrialisation, technological change, and urban expansion have reshaped national economies; yet many rural areas continue to face persistent challenges, such as poverty, migration, and environmental stress. Some regions are witnessing population decline and ageing communities, while others struggle to provide livelihoods for growing youth cohorts. These issues are further compounded by climate risks, unequal access to services, and institutional gaps that limit local development capacity.

The workshop is envisioned as a starting point for deeper regional collaboration on rural development, where participants will share experiences, identify adaptable policy models, and promote leadership for sustainable rural transformation. It will be guided by the following thematic areas:

1. Demographic Transition and Rural Vitality

2. Climate Resilence and Environmental Stewardship

3. Digital Transfromation and Technological Inclusion

4. Institutional Innovation, Decentralisation, and Participatory Governance

5. Youth Empowerment and Livelihood Creation

6. Integrated Economic Growth and Social Resilience

Mr Sabyasachi Dutta, Executive Director, Asian Confluence, said, “Asia’s rural regions are diverse, yet they share many common challenges. The ‘Cross Asian Dialogue on Rural Development – Challenges and Opportunities’ workshop is an opportunity to bring voices from across the region together to learn from one another and co-create pathways toward resilient and inclusive rural development. At Asian Confluence, we believe that sustained regional dialogue of the ‘third space’ is essential for shaping solutions that are both locally rooted and globally relevant.”

Mr Kenichiro Iwahori, Program Officer, Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), said,” As Asia faces complex demographic and climate-related challenges, the need for shared understanding and collaborative action has never been greater. This workshop is a timely opportunity to bring together diverse insights that can help chart a more resilient and sustainable future for rural communities.”

By bringing diverse perspectives and experiences together, the program seeks to build shared understanding, highlight scalable solutions, and foster leadership committed to inclusive and sustainable rural transformation. The workshop further aims to strengthen ongoing knowledge sharing, mutual learning, and collective action toward resilient and thriving rural communities across Asia.
